Testing That Redefines How Insulation Keeps You Warm.
CLO AND THE DYNAMIC EFFECT OF DYNALOFT INSULATION POWERED BY 37.5 TECHNOLOGY
CLO value is a measurement of thermal resistance used to help determine a product’s ability to insulate, or retain heat. During periods of activity, products with higher CLO values can trap heat and humidity, making the user hot and sweaty.
TESTING
To test the effects of humidity on CLO values, certified third-party lab Vartest Laboratories performed ASTM D1518 with DYNALOFT insulation powered by 37.5 Technology and the same insulation without 37.5 Technology. In this example, ASTM D1518 testing was performed at:
- 30% humidity – Low humidity level, representing low activity or user is cold
- 70% humidity – High humidity level, representing high activity or user is hot
As shown in the graph, at high humidity levels the CLO value of DYNALOFT insulation powered by 37.5 Technology decreases by 24% due to removal of humidity, while the CLO value of the insulation without 37.5 Technology increases by 4%. This means that as the user heats up and starts to produce more sweat, the DYNALOFT insulation powered by 37.5 Technology becomes less resistant to heat flow, allowing excess heat to be released. The insulation without 37.5 Technology on the other hand, becomes more resistant to heat flow, trapping excess heat and moisture that can lead to overheating.
CONCLUSIONS
By managing the humidity level next to a user’s skin, DYNALOFT insulation powered by 37.5 Technology offers a higher CLO value during periods of low activity and a lower CLO value during periods of high activity. This means that DYNALOFT insulation powered by 37.5 Technology offers the unique benefit of helping to keep the user warm when they’re cold, while also allowing heat and humidity to be released when they’re hot, expanding their comfort range across activities and environments.
